Interviews in review

A lot has been going on over the past week.  To bring everyone up to speed, I have interviewed with three different firms, which I'll refer to as "Sole Practitioner," "Foreclosure" and "Insurance Defense."  Here's where I currently stand regarding each firm:

Sole Practitioner
Oh my god does this job sound like it sucks.  I've had two interviews at this place and I really don't like what I see.  Granted, I'd get more experience than I'm getting now, but the pay is the same, there are no benefits, and the office manager's office is so creepy I thought I was going to get murdered by some sort of crazed clown.  You probably had to be there, but that actually makes sense.

I think I stand a pretty good chance of actually getting this job, but I have to decide if the experience is worth the ridiculously shitty pay and creepy environment.  I'm currently leaning towards taking it for the experience, but I really hope one of these other jobs pulls through.

Foreclosure
This is my second choice.  The job is with one of the bigger foreclosure firms in the state (which seriously narrows things down if you're trying to figure out the firm).  The office is a little creepy, the practice sounds kinda boring and similar to what I do now, but I think the pay would be decent and I'd get courtroom experience.

Not my dream job, but definitely a lot better than what I've got now.  I think my chances are pretty good, and I have a second interview this afternoon, so we'll see what happens.

Insurance Defense
Definitely my best option.  This place is a pretty serious firm and that's what I'm really looking for.  The pay would be decent, I'd get benefits, lots of experience, and, solely based on my impression of the partners I interviewed with, a smart group of people to work with.

I think the first interview went well, but my lack of experience is, of course, an issue.  I'm supposed to hear back later this week about a second interview.  Fingers crossed...

  1. Good luck! I'm hoping that when you land a job you'll keep posting and offering your insight into the workplace/life in general.

  2. I'm sure there will be a brief blogging haitus if I land a job, but I'll continue eventually. I'd hate to deprive the world of my insights :)

  3. I agree with your assesment. I'd rank them insurance defense (really PI defense) first (especially if you're interested in health & bioethics), followed by the foreclosure firm, followed by the shitty solo, followed by your present job.

If you get a job at the foreclosure firm, be careful no to stay too long. Get your experience and, within 3 years, graduate. I have a friend at P & Assoc. in Chicago and another friend at C & Assoc in Burr Ridge; and they've both been there for 10 years. Mr. C & Mr. P make a fortune in this economy, but their associates are expendable and the associates can not easily go to the banks and steal a book of business. But in a few years, you'll have mastered the fundamentals of civil litigation.

Even working with the solo will be an ok place to start. You'll get to meet lots of lawyers. When you get a legal job, you don't just join a firm, you join a legal community.

    Good luck!
