French movie

The other day, I decided that I was going to start watching French movies.  I figured that it would be a good way of improving my ability to understand spoken French and it would be fun to watch some French movies.  In theory, that still sounds like a good plan; but, it backfired about half an hour into my first French movie.

I enjoy language and grammar, but I don't like reading subtitles and can't stand weird French movies.  While I'm usually a pretty big dork, I seriously outdid myself this time.  My girlfriend was worried that I was going to make her watch a bunch of weird French movies and I can honestly say that is not going to be an issue.

  1. You should watch Amelie with the French subtitles on. That way you'll be able to rely on your knowledge of the written language.

Les Visiteurs (sp) with the killer from The Professional was a good for cheap laughs.

Reading Le Monde online would be another good way to expand your skills.

  2. Hmm...I hadn't considered using French subtitles. I'll give that a shot. As it is, I'm having trouble paying attention to the French while reading English.

I try to read French news pretty regularly. While I was working, I found that reading an article a day during my lunch break was a good way to practice.

  3. I would be self-studying Spanish (took 3 classes before) and have recently decided (yesterday) that I should watch Spanish movies. I hope that would go well for me. I think Spanish films aren't as kooky as French films.

For some other things to do, Stanford University School of Engineering will offer its Introduction to Artificial Intelligence Online for free this Fall. I am thinking of signing up, although I am hoping to have started work by then.

  4. I second the Amelie option. There are also other non-super-artsy movies out there worth watching. Persepolis, the Triplets of Belleville, Camille Claudel, etc.

  5. You could also watch movies you know that have dubbed french audio track. Kinda fun to all of a sudden have some French dude try to do Darth Vader.

  6. Where are you watching French movies? Care to link (if there is a link?)
