Updates

1) I just found out that I didn't get the corporate compliance job.  Fuuuuck.  On the bright side, corporate compliance sounded like it would really suck.

2) I finally got an email from the guys at the medical device company.  I guess they've been really busy, but I'm supposed to give them a call the week of August 22, at which point they should have more updates on the job.  If this is all a tease, leading up to them telling me that the job won't start for several more months, I'm going to absolutely lose my shit.

3) My girlfriend is moving in with me at the end of the month.

4) The first couple months of unemployment weren't bad but, as I watching my savings dwindle every week, I'm starting to get a little depressed.  Some sort of job better come through, and soon.

I really wish I had more updates, but that's pretty much it.

Updates

1) I printed out fake business cards for myself.  Now, all of the randoms I meet visiting museums in the middle of the day will receive a card from "D, Esq."  As long as they don't actually want me to perform any legal services, I should be in good shape.
2) A friend I work out with is a paralegal at a pretty good sized firm.  One of the lawyers at the firm just left and they're looking for a replacement.  He gave the partner my resume and said that I should expect a call.
3) A couple of days ago, I went to a fancy event at a club where my dad is a member.  While I was there, I was at a table with a bunch of lawyers.  One of them works at a firm that does med-mal defense and, once he heard that I'm interested in the area and my folks are both doctors, he asked me to send him my resume.
4) I'm back in my hometown again this weekend.  The small town where my dad has been working recently is having a gala event and my dad wanted me to go.  I tried to get out of it, but I don't have any good excuses at the moment.  All my dad had to do say was, "What else are you doing?  Do you have big, unemployed plans the next day?  Didn't think so."  Anyway, maybe I'll have a chance to pass out more of my fake business cards.
5) I'm still going one new place each day, but I just haven't had a chance to blog about it.  Maybe I'll get back up to speed this weekend.

Updates

1) For those of you who don't follow regularly, I'm unemployed.

2) Attorney 2 called today to offer me some contract work.  He must have gotten my unemployment claim in the mail and, coincidentally, needs help because Attorney 6 isn't working out. (If you'll recall, he hired Attorney 6 rather than hiring me.  This whole conversation made me smile.)  Anyway, I left on good terms and I need work, so I'm going to do some contract work at my old firm.  It sounds like they want me to start immediately.

3) I'm going on vacation with my girlfriend to Puerto Rico in a couple of days.  Should be a nice way to clear my head.

4) My dad has a friend who sells medical supplies.  In the past, he has suggested that, if I ever don't want to practice law, he could probably hook me up with a job in his company.  I'm thinking it might be time to try my hand at selling medical supplies.  Anybody need a hip?

5) I don't own Microsoft Word and have been trying to find a way to send my resume out using Google Docs.  The problem is that it undergoes some slight formatting changes whenever I save it as a .doc file or as a pdf.  While slight, these changes really fuck up my resume.  If anyone has a solution to this problem, I'm all ears.  I haven't tried Open Office yet, but it's next on my list.

Updates

It's been a while since I've done an updates post, so here goes:

1) I have this new thing called "disposable income."  Not a lot, but some.  I'm a fan of this development.
2) I'm still taking French lessons.  It's a challenge to find the time, but I enjoy it and it's one of the few things I do which actually gives me some fulfillment.
3) My elbow is still fucked up and my workouts have been crap lately.  Just in case you were curious.
4) I have a new kung-fu student who is in college and thinking about going to law school.  I'm doing my best to talk him out of it.  I like to think that anyone who graduated law school within the past ten years would do the same thing.
5) Despite my complaining, things really could be a lot worse right now.  Although my job isn't a dream come true, I'm finally getting some experience which, hopefully, will be transferable to a job that I would actually want.

Updates

1) In case you missed it, I have a job.  This job is from this interview if you were curious.

2) It's a small firm and it's located in the loop, not in some shack in a bad neighborhood.  They don't have a website, so I don't know a lot about them, but they do a lot of commercial litigation and construction litigation.  Not my ideal job, but it sounds absolutely glorious compared to what I'm doing now.

3) I'm in such a good mood that I didn't dread waking up this morning, my workouts are better and colors even look brighter.  Seriously, the sky is bluer, the clouds are whiter and the grass is greener.  It's like I'm on the other side of that fence people always talk about.

4) I'm going to the Bears game this weekend.

5) I actually got this job from a random job posting, so no networking was involved.  I only mention that because some of the comments to my previous post seemed to credit networking, which isn't exactly true.  Though I am sure all of the random networking I do will come in handy one of these days.

6) I start after Thanksgiving.  I'm sure there will be a brief blogging hiatus until I feel out the new firm's stance on blogging at work, but I'll be back after a little while.

7) I think I'm going to keep the title of my blog even though it might not be as accurate as it was a year ago.  But, I'm going to change the layout.  I'm thinking about having three columns, maybe?  If you're afraid of change, watch out.

8) I'm still going to my current firm's Christmas party.  If you're a regular reader, you know I enjoy a good Christmas party.

9) I'm currently wondering if I'll still get my Christmas bonus.  I feel like I should and it's always a really good bonus.

10) Don't worry, even though I'm feeling dangerously optimistic, the general tone of my blog probably won't change.  I'm pretty sure I can handle being optimistic and annoyed at the same time.

Updates

I know I just did an updates post, but a couple of new things have happened over the past few days.

1) I have an interview tomorrow.  It's at a foreclosure defense firm that looks kind of gimmicky and is really far away from my apartment.  Still, I'd love to have this job.

2) I have a lot of new kung fu students.  One of them is a med mal mediator or arbitrator or something like that.  He isn't a lawyer himself, but he works with a lot of lawyers and offered to forward my resume around.

3) My dad was recently a witness in an administrative hearing.  I went to watch the proceedings and talked to the lawyers for a bit.  Nothing really came out of it, but I figure any exposure is good exposure.

4) I started my winter workout schedule.  It involves more heavy lifting than my summer workouts.  I'm trying Wendler's 5-3-1 program.  I'll let you know how it goes.

5) I am officially applying to downstate jobs.

If nothing else, I think that I've gotten a lot better at networking.  Through my various classes and activities I meet a lot of random people and they all have copies of my resume with instructions to distribute it at will.  When I get to a point where I'm looking for clients, I think I'll be a business generating machine.

Updates

1) I did not get any of the jobs I interviewed for in the past month.  Now, I'm back to square one.  Again.

2) A girl in my French class is trying to find me a job at the hotel where she works.  It wouldn't be legal, but I'm ready to kiss law goodbye anyway.  They're specifically hiring doormen, but she thinks I'd be overqualified.  I disagree.

3) My depression is starting to effect my workouts; which, in turn, is making me more depressed.  This is unacceptable.

4) I'm back to looking for malpractice insurance and places to do pro bono work.  This was suggested about a month ago, but was briefly on the backburner with my flurry of interviews.  I'm back to actively looking around.

5) I shaved with a safety razor for the first time last night and I didn't cut myself at all.  I'm more than a little impressed with myself, even though it took a good twenty minutes and I'm sure nobody cares.

6) I just talked to my boss and he's going to try to find some writing for me to do.

Updates

1) Insurance defense firm still hasn't called.  Now, I'm more pissed off than depressed.  Seriously, calling me back is just common courtesy.  I'll probably do a full post/rant on this one.

2) I have another job interview on Tuesday.

3) At the suggestion of one of my readers, I've started reading French news.  It's actually an interesting and challenging way to pass the time.  So, thank you random reader.  That was a good suggestion.

4) My degenerating mental health must be pretty noticeable.  Today's conversation with Attorney 2 went something like this:
Attorney 2: How's it going?
Me: Ok.
Attorney 2: Are you really ok?
Me: Yeah.
Attorney 2: Ok, well, you don't have the usual spring in your step.
Me: Yeah, it's been a rough week.

Attorney 2 isn't a very perceptive guy.  If he's noticing that I'm bummed out, I must be oozing depression.

5) All things considered, I'm actually in a pretty good mood today.  I always do the same "birthday workout" around my birthday to gauge how I'm doing year to year.  I did it this morning and I beat my record from last year.  Go me!

Updates

Not an optimistic updates post.

1) Obviously, I did not get that job.

2) I just gave a bunch of resumes to a friend of my dad.  Maybe she'll pull through, but I doubt it.

3) A new round of French just started and there's actually a lawyer in my class.  The goal for next class is to hit him up for a job.  I must be a huge pain in the ass to be around.

4) I am officially out of job search ideas.  It's time to find work downstate.  Unless a job magically appears, I'll be saying goodbye to Chicago in the near future.

5) It's not even 11:00am and I'm already fighting the urge to throw my stapler through my wall.  This is not going to be a good day.

6) At least I'm well rested.  Yesterday, I gave up on my day and went to sleep at around 9:00pm.

Updates

One of my more productive updates posts, I suppose:

1) I still haven't heard back about the job interview from a couple weeks ago.  I sent a followup email to the guy and left him a voicemail a couple of days ago, but I haven't heard anything.  I don't think this is a good sign.

2) Luckily, I have another job interview on Monday.  It's with a smaller firm and, again, it sounds pretty similar to what I do now, so I think I have a shot.

3) The "lawyer work" I'm doing required that I write an email summarizing my findings.  I'm not accustomed to putting this much thought into my job.

4) Just signed up for a new round of French.  I'm actually getting better!

5) I got through the first round of cuts for a job I applied for with the city.  At the end of September, I need to pick up a packet to do a research project and then there's an oral exam at the end of October.  Based on the projected salary, I'm WAY out of my league, but it never hurts to try.

6) Creepo recently got married and the unlucky lady is visiting our office today.  Oh my god, she just walked in!  Hang on...I will be damned.  She's not horribly unattractive.  He must be even richer than I had thought.  Ugh, they had a pregnancy scare and are seriously telling my boss about it.  I need to go be somewhere else.

Updates

 Here's what's new:

1) I'm officially signed up with the temp agency mentioned in previous posts.  Hopefully, some part time stuff will come my way.

2) My dad found a firm that is hiring in Small Town, IL.  Not exactly a dream come true, but possibly better than this nightmare.

3) I'm starting the process of getting licensed in federal court.  I've been told I should do that.

4) I'm borrowing my firm's Sullivan's to send my resume out to some solo practitioners in the area (per Gus' suggestion).  Not like my other mass mailings have done any good, but I might as well try.

5) My old martial arts instructor keeps asking me to move back to my home town and teach for him.  It's pretty tempting right about now.

Updates

Here we go again:

1) Recently had another lawyer review my resume and actually got several helpful suggestions.  Having implemented the changes, we'll see if anyone hires me.
2) Forwarded my new resume to the legal recruiter I've been working with.  He suggested that I send my resume out to the small/mid size firms in the area.  Mass-mailings haven't gone well in the past, but I'm up for anything.
3) Finally had lunch with the guy who has been blowing me off for the past month.  Pretty much covered that in my previous post, I guess.
4) New round of French started.
5) I've started fucking some things up at work.  It's somewhat hard to give a damn once you realize that you've wasted three years of you life doing mindless bitch work for nothing.

Updates

It's another updates post.  I think you know how these go.

1) I've been to court twice now.  Once, with supervision; the other time, on my own.  I know it's not really a big deal - most firms let their law clerks and/or secretaries do it - but, it's something new and I get to call myself an attorney at my firm for resume purposes.

2) Now that I'm going to court, I might need more than one suit.  I might also need another tie or two.  I never thought pretending to be a lawyer would be so expensive.

3) That lawyer the old guy hooked me up with never got back to me about lunch last week.  He said that he was too busy to email me, so we're going to try again this week.  If I ever hear back from him, that is.

4) It's time to sign up for a new round of French class.  Again, maybe someone in the next group will be a lawyer and will want a new associate with basic French language skills.

5) I just greeted another person who is interviewing for the job I should have.  Another tiny part of my spirit just got crushed.

More updates

Don't be fooled, nothing has actually happened.  But, these count as updates, nonetheless.

1) I applied to the two positions suggested by the old guy.  He said he'd even be a reference for me.  Fingers crossed...

2) Old guy also set me up with some big-shot lawyer who practices in health law.  He's the "chair" of the health law group at a pretty big firm.  He doesn't think there's much available at his firm, but I'm having lunch with him next week.  It's good to know the old guy is actually pulling for me.

3) My girlfriend's boss is looking at my resume.  It's official - my girlfriend's boss has now been more helpful than my entire firm.  Take a minute for that to sink in.

4) Secretary 2 is pissing everyone off and might get fired.  Apparently, talking about everyone behind their backs, in an office of eight people, was not her best idea.  Go figure.

5) It's looking like I'm definitely not getting Attorney 4's job.  I'm not basing this on any direct conversation Attorney 2 has had with me.  That would be silly.  I'm basing this on several vague comments about how he's still on my side, that he's going to try to get me some court time, and a not-so-funny joke about how I should take Secretary 2's job if she gets fired.

Job search updates

To be honest, nothing is new.  I'm just labeling this post "updates" to make myself feel better.  Regardless, here's what's going on:

1) New round of French class started up this week.  I keep hoping I'll meet some lawyer who would love to have me, and my basic French language skills, working at his firm.  Not likely, I know.  At the very least, I'll meet some new people who will spread the word that I need a job.  That's kind of how networking is supposed to work, right?

2) I'm considering another mass mailing.  Or, as the career counselors like to call it, a "targeted mailing."  Given that I was 0/50 the last time I tried this, I'm not getting my hopes up.

3) I signed back up with my undergrad job search website.  There are zero attorney positions listed, but at least I feel like I'm trying.

4) Attorney 4 is leaving in July, so I'm confident I'd get her job in August.  Two years ago, that was my worst case scenario; and it's still my worst case scenario.  I fucking hate this place and I may move back to my home town if this scenario actually plays out.

5) My French teacher actually just emailed me to say that he ran into a lawyer that he knows who would be willing to have lunch with me.  She doesn't think she'll be of much help, but at least it's someone new to talk to.  Again, this is how networking is supposed to work, right?

Updates

Whereas I was crazy-busy last week, I have dick going on today.  So, I have plenty of time to make a list of inconsequential updates in my life and post them on my blog.  Gotta do something to pass the time.

1) I bought a bottle of Beam on Saturday and, attached, was a coupon for a free frozen pizza.  It's like they're reading my mind!
2) Got an email from a recruiter about a job I applied for.  Granted, she hasn't called me back yet, that whore, but I'm  remaining optimistic.  Trying to, at least.
3) Secretary 1 has a friend who works at another law firm and she says they need an associate.  She now has a copy of my resume and instructions to tell her boss he can't function without me.
4) St. Patrick's Day is coming up!  Day-drinking is my favorite kind of drinking.
5) My knee is feeling better, so I get to start lifting again tomorrow.  Front-squats!
6) Secretary 2, though overly giggly, is really quite nice and seems to be fairly competent.

All in all, this week has not sucked so far.  Don't worry though, there's still plenty of time.

Random updates

I've been having a pretty slow couple of days, but here are a few updates:

1) I have an email address for my blog now.  I'm sure my followers, all five of you, are just giddy.  Even if you're not, hey, I'm up to five followers.  Go, me.
2) I just signed up with a legal recruiter.  I actually found this guy through someone in my French class.  Now that's what I call networking!  I'll be sure to keep everyone posted if he actually finds me any jobs.
3) We're apparently having wine and cheese in our office after work today - though I have no idea why.  I don't actually like wine or cheese, but I'm not one to turn down free booze or food.  On a side note, one time in college I was invited to a smart person party where they were serving wine, cheese and appetizers.  My friends and I proceeded to drink all of their wine, eat all of their food, and make general asses of ourselves.  I like to think I've matured past that, but the evidence points to the contrary.
4) My boss had sweatshirts made with our firm logo on the front.  Maybe we'll get them tonight with our wine and cheese.  That would be classy.
